Modern Farmhouse

Birmingham · Dark-stained cedar, limestone, reclaimed wood · Two houses for two sisters

A modernist farmhouse in Birmingham built for two sisters and their families, on adjacent lots, with windows aligned so the cousins can see each other across the yard. Double gables, a 20-foot wall of glass in the great room, and interiors that look toward Cranbrook and mid-century California.

The architect and interior designer drew a house with very few places to hide a joint; the pale-oak ceilings, black millwork, and steel windows had to meet cleanly everywhere. Interiors told the story, with the professional photography, in February 2021.
