Modern in the Trees
The Wall Street Journal, June 2025 · “His Nonnegotiables: A $1 Million Whiskey Wall and Somewhere to Park His Porsches” · Finalist, House, THE PLAN Award 2023 · Winner, Residential Lighting Design, LIT Lighting Design Awards
A new house in Birmingham, built of precast concrete planks and Corten steel, with floor-to-ceiling steel windows that open every room to the trees. Inside: a kitchen built to the same exacting standard, a whiskey room, and a lighting system tuned to every room and every hour.
The owner knew exactly what he wanted, down to the absence of a single handle or hinge, and the architects drew it precisely. Our job was to build it that precisely. Concrete, Corten, steel, and wood all meet in plain sight, and the planks and panels had to course out exactly, so every joint had to be right. The Wall Street Journal told the story in June 2025.
